Contrary to initial speculation, the explosions were not caused by the pager batteries, but by the lithium inside them. The explosion was caused by advanced technology that transmitted a message that activated the explosives.
In addition, sources said the explosives, often strapped to a belt, were designed to cause maximum damage by direct impact on the body. It was noted that pagers that were either turned off or in areas without coverage did not explode, as did older pager models.
The sources then expanded their explanation, noting that the pagers were “tweaked from the source through their IC (integrated circuit) blocks” that contained the explosive.”
