Today was the last day of hearings in the case of ex-employee of the Ministry of Internal Affairs Dmitry Zakharchenko and ex-co-owner of GK 1520 (the largest contractor of Russian Railways) Valery Markelov, who, according to the Investigative Committee, paid billions in bribes to Zakharchenko. Details in the report of the VChK-OGPU correspondent.

Part 1.

For the third day in a row, the Presnensky District Court of Moscow continues the debate on the case (for the second in a row) of ex-Colonel Dmitry Zakharchenko and his alleged bribe-payers and accomplices. The state prosecutor Milana Digaeva has already requested the terms for them (at the upper limit of the announced charges) (the Cheka-OGPU wrote about this).

Almost the entire meeting the day before was devoted to the ex-co-owner of GC “1520” Valery Markelov, who was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer with numerous metastases. Despite the official confirmation of this diagnosis by the Federal Penitentiary Service, judge Sergei Artemov did not release him from custody for immediate treatment (the need for it was noted in the documents brought to court by Markelov’s lawyers). “It’s as if he’s being sentenced to death,” was heard every now and then during breaks in the trial. It must be said that Markelov’s lawyer, Alexander Gofshtein, repeatedly repeated the same idea in an interview with numerous television channels that gathered at the Presnensky court building before the start of the hearing.

The debate on April 29 opened with an almost three-hour speech by Markelov’s defense attorney, Alexei Sterlikov. He developed the theses voiced in the speech of his colleague Gofshtein the day before, primarily concentrating on the lack of direct evidence against Markelov on the “Ploshchadka” (for example, even the version that “Markel”, “Sleeper” and “Sleepers” appearing on the “Ploshchadka” is Markelov, is based only on the assumption of the state prosecution), procedural shortcomings of the investigation (all barely verifiable episodes involving this accused relate to 2007-2009), as well as contradictions within the evidence presented to him (for example, the lack of correspondence between the “Markel” account and the columns “Profit”, “Zakhar” or “Cash”). He went through the testimony of all the prosecution witnesses in detail, pointing out serious gaps in them, and also explained in detail that Markelov had neither motive nor reason to give bribes to Zakharchenko. Sterlikov also drew attention to the fact that the very fact of the transfer of bribes by Markelov, their size, and the place of transfer were not recorded anywhere and asked to acquit his client.

On April 27, the Presnensky District Court of Moscow continued to consider the case of ex-Colonel Dmitry Zakharchenko. The investigation believes that he received billions in bribes for general patronage from the largest contractors of Russian Railways – GC 1520. On the sidelines of the court everything is becoming more persistent…
