The US Federal Prosecutor’s Office opened a criminal case against Deputy Chairman of the State Duma Alexander Babakov and two of his employees.
According to Igor Slabykh’s telegram channel, Alexander Babakov and two employees of his apparatus: Mikhail Plisyuk and Alexander Vorobyov are accused of three counts:
– conspiracy to act as agents of a foreign state without notifying the Ministry of Justice,
– conspiracy to commit visa fraud,
– conspiracy to circumvent sanctions.
In particular, since 2011, the defendants have used at least three consultants as their proxies, who acted in the United States to promote Russian interests, for example, trying to arrange meetings with American congressmen. Thus, attempts were made to arrange meetings between congressmen and Babakov in one of the European countries. .
In 2017, the company targeted an unnamed member of Congress who had expressed support for Russia. Actually, Babakov tried to get a visa specifically for a meeting with him/her and in an email he apologized for the fact that the planned meeting would not take place, as there was a delay with the visa. They tried to invite the same member of Congress (and another businessman) to a conference in Yalta, which was organized by the Crimean authorities, paying all expenses for flights/food/accommodation.
