Channel sources said that this topic was discussed at two meetings held at the White House last week. U.S. officials also worry that Russia could view sending heavy weapons to Ukraine as a provocation, which they believe could provoke “some kind of retaliation against the United States.”
CNN’s interlocutors clarified that provision of shorter-range missile systems to Ukraine is also being considered. According to US officials, training the Ukrainian military to use any of the missile systems will take little time – about two weeks. However, the United States is concerned that, in general, the country’s MLRS reserves are “not that large.” According to CNN, last week Pentagon representatives met with the CEO of Lockheed Martin to discuss supplies and ramping up production of MLRS. The UK has also not yet decided whether to send these systems to Ukraine, and would like to do this together with the United States, the channel claims.
