“The harbinger of a coup in Russia is always increased security of state institutions. A few days before the situation with PMC Wagner escalated, the FSO suddenly asked the head of the Russian Guard, Zolotv, for help with fighters from Dzerzhinsky’s division. The Russian Guards have strengthened FSO patrols near the Kremlin, the White House, the presidential administration and other government facilities in the capital. On June 27, the reinforcement was removed as suddenly as it appeared, and the main government institutions are guarded as usual.
In addition to strengthening the security of buildings, operational groups of the Central Asian FSB and the General Staff of the Ministry of Defense, which were personally reinforced by Defense Minister Shoigu with a high-ranking retinue, flew into the war zone in advance. A group of officers from the Main Personnel Directorate of the Ministry of Defense also flew to Rostov. There they announced to everyone that by July 1, PMC Wagner must be disbanded and cease to exist. The newly arrived task forces and operational personnel located on the ground were ordered to ensure this transition without any incidents.
Thus, with the approval of Moscow, an operation to disband Prigozhin’s army was to take place. In the protracted conflict between the Minister of Defense and the head of PMCs, a period should have appeared. But things didn’t go according to plan.
According to sources of the Cheka-OGPU, Shoigu was initially motivated by someone to take very decisive measures against several of Wagner’s leaders. In any case, Prigozhin and his associates, including Utkin, should have been interned.
But they did not take into account the popularity of the country’s chief cook among front-line officers, soldiers and service operatives. All possible scenarios for the detention of Prigozhin and his people became available to the latter. According to a source of the OGPU Cheka, they did not foresee the main thing – the reluctance to side with the extremely unpopular leaders in the Northern Military District zone – Shoigu and Gerasimov.
Then a missile strike was launched on Wagner’s positions. After an unsuccessful missile attack on Wagner’s positions, action began.
In a matter of hours, the headquarters of the Southern Group and the city of Rostov-on-Don were captured. The Minister of Defense fled to Moscow.
Then, within 24 hours, the Wagnerites almost approached the capital.
