The Russia 24 TV channel aired a film about the allegedly treacherous activities of journalist Ivan Safronov. The most “convincing” evidence was the reconstruction of Ivan’s beer gatherings with a supposed Czech spy in a pub. According to the Cheka-OGPU, the FSB Central Election Commission began preparing a documentary film “incriminating Safronov” even before the verdict was pronounced, but Lubyanka representatives could not find understanding with the management of the First TV Channel, where they initially wanted to post information about Safronov’s case. Even there they found a reason to avoid such an “obligation”. Only verified Lubyanka personnel Eduard Petrov responded. But even with all his desire, he was unable to show the public at least some evidence of Safronov’s betrayal. They simply did not exist, but was the daily work of a journalist who, with his incisive publications, was able to win the trust of workers in the defense industrial complex and officers of the Defense Ministry, who fed him with facts of corruption and problems in the defense industry and the Russian army. In court, the lawyers proved that all the materials that were published in newspapers, including those reviews that Safronov did for Western publications, were based on information from open sources and were not state secrets. And Ivan himself was never allowed to know military secrets. He reached the level of serious public control and began to greatly irritate Defense Minister Shoigu and his deputies personally. Only by publishing about the non-functioning space echelon of the Missile Attack Warning System, throwing billions of rubles down the drain, was he able to personally offend Shoigu and his deputy Tsalikov; they had already reported to Putin about the successful launches and the start of work of the comic segment of the early warning system. And Safronov had enough such articles.

It is known for certain that Deputy Defense Minister Tsalikov transmitted threats to Safronov at the end of 2019.

The very arrest of Safronov by military counterintelligence officers is indicative for professionals. At one time, after several failures, the KGB, when detaining spies, created a special department as part of Group A, which was engaged in arresting traitors. An enemy intelligence agent was captured with lightning speed and dressed in pre-prepared clothes to avoid suicide options and a signal from his handler. The situation with Safronov was ordinary; he was simply searched and taken to Lefortovo. Pure counterintelligence did not deal with him; the case was developed in the Main Directorate of Military Counterintelligence, where the head is a protege and close friend of Shoigu and Tsalikov, who, at their request, dealt with the obstinate journalist.
