The Moscow City Court continued to consider the appeal in the case of ex-colonel “policeman” Dmitry Zakharchenko (in May 2022, he received 16 years in a maximum security colony and a fine of 470 million rubles). This high-profile process started on November 15 last year, but was postponed several times due to Zakharchenko’s protests (he complained about the inability to familiarize himself with the case materials and audio protocols) and the serious illness of businessman Valery Markelov (terminal pancreatic cancer), due to which he was unable to participate in the meetings. At the last meeting on May 16, Markelov’s lawyer Alexander Gofshtein petitioned for a medical examination of his guarantor at the First Oncology Hospital in Moscow (the state prosecution insisted on another institution, but did not receive the support of the judges). The Moscow City Court issued a corresponding ruling on this.

At the hearing in the Moscow City Court, everyone present in the hall was waiting for the results of the medical examination. Everything turned out in an unexpected way: Markelov’s status did not allow him to be examined at the First Oncology Hospital: from its official response it turned out that only accused and suspects were treated there. Therefore, at the request of state prosecutor Milana Digaeva, the court returned to consideration as the place of examination of MSCh-50 of the Federal Penitentiary Service of Russia (located in the Moscow region). Markelov’s lawyers did not object, noting that their guarantor’s condition was steadily deteriorating.

The court granted the petition and issued a ruling on Markelov’s medical examination at MSCh-50 of the Federal Penitentiary Service.
