The Investigative Committee of Russia (ICR) supports the bill on life imprisonment for repeat offenders, the head of the department, Alexander Bastrykin, said in an interview with Rossiyskaya Gazeta. In his opinion, such a strict measure “fully corresponds to the situation, because this is not the first example when, after being released, pedophiles commit crimes again.”

“The situation when a child is kidnapped by two men during the daytime and killed is a tragedy. And of course, it is necessary to take adequate measures. The Investigative Committee supported the bill on the possibility of assigning life imprisonment to pedophiles if they repeatedly commit crimes against children,” Bastrykin said.

The head of the Investigative Committee also spoke in favor of strict control over those who were released “from places of imprisonment after committing crimes related to assault on the sexual integrity of minors.”

On September 10, Senator Andrei Turchak, as well as State Duma deputies Pavel Krasheninnikov and Alexander Khinshtein (all United Russia) introduced a bill to the lower house of parliament that would tighten criminal liability for pedophiles. It is proposed to expand the use of life imprisonment not only to repeat offenders who raped a victim under 18 years of age, but also to those who committed violence against several victims, as well as to cases where the crime is associated with the commission of another serious or especially serious crime.
