While Putin fraternizes with Xi Jinping in the Kremlin, the FSB accuses scientists of treason in favor of China. Surprisingly, one of the largest groups in terms of the number of those charged under Article 275 of the Criminal Code after allegedly changing things in favor of Ukraine is Chinese, and not British or German. How can we explain this activity of the service?
Let’s conduct a thought experiment. Let’s put ourselves in the shoes of the country’s political leadership. For you, the FSB is not a criminal conglomerate, but the main “bayonet” of your personal security, and at the same time the security of Russia. How do you use it? If you are a bloodthirsty autocrat, you will most likely answer: to control the opposition, instill an atmosphere of fear, monitor sentiments, for censorship in the media and surveillance of your own elites, for intelligence and counterintelligence – and, of course, to maintain the myth of the omnipotence of the intelligence service itself, after all, your political stability depends on it. In official Newspeak, this is all called “protection from internal and external enemies.” But then suddenly, somehow, among the “enemies” a collective scientist appears who:
1) develops the military-industrial complex;
2) does not pose a political threat;
3) is a de facto instrument of soft power and diplomacy.
What is the reason? I have two key hypotheses. The first is “incompetence”, the second is “performance”. There is a third one – “corruption” – but I won’t talk about that, this is for my dear colleagues, researchers and investigators.
Here are some examples from recent years.
Tomsk physicist Alexander Lukanin was sentenced to 7.5 years in prison (below the lower limit of 12 years) in a case of treason in favor of China. After retirement, the scientist collaborated with Chinese scientific organizations and worked at Shenyang University in China. According to media reports, Lukanin was developing high-voltage power supplies. He did not have access to state secrets. Alexander Alexandrovich is well over sixty.
Professor Anatoly Maslov is awaiting a verdict in the case of treason in favor of China. The main direction of his scientific activity is gas dynamics. According to Maslov’s colleague, the scientist was forced to work with foreign partners on instructions from the government. Maslov carried out the country’s first numerical calculations of the stability of compressible flows and showed the possibility of complete stabilization of the supersonic boundary layer by cooling the surface of the aircraft. Anatoly Alexandrovich is 76 years old.
