The charge of treason brought against Alexander Shiplyuk, director of the Institute of Theoretical and Applied Mechanics (ITPM) of the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences, is based on the transfer of secret information to China. This was reported by Reuters, citing two people familiar with the contents of the case.
Previously, the reason for the arrest of Shiplyuk, who was detained in August last year, was not known. True, it was the “Chinese trace” that was present in the case of the first scientist from ITPM arrested for treason (this happened in June 2022) – chief researcher Anatoly Maslov. Both were charged under Article 275 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation, the maximum penalty for which this year became lifelong.
According to Reuters, Shiplyuk is suspected of transmitting classified materials at a scientific conference in China in 2017. He himself insists on his innocence, claiming that the information in question is not secret and was available on the Internet, agency sources say.
Shiplyuk and Maslov have been working on hypersonic missiles, which Vladimir Putin so boasted about, for more than 10 years.
The third ITAM scientist arrested in April on suspicion of treason was Valery Zvegintsev, who founded the high-speed aerogasdynamics laboratory at the institute.
