The death of the 57-year-old president of the St. Petersburg Karate Federation Vitaly Konev, who was discovered on February 7 at the Nevsky shooting range with a bullet in the head, raises more and more questions for the investigation. The fact is that a 5.45 caliber bullet was found in the back of Konev’s head, fired from a Kalashnikov assault rifle or its civilian variations. Then things get weird. The fact is that the bullet hit Konev’s head at the end of its life – its force was not enough to pierce through the athlete’s head. This dismisses the media version that the bullet could have flown from a neighboring section of the Nevsky training ground, where special forces were supposedly training at that time – this section is only a few hundred meters away and the lethal force of the bullet would undoubtedly be much higher. The version that the bullet could have flown from a greater distance from the Levashovo military training ground has not yet been confirmed purely by ballistic characteristics. It carefully entered the back of the victim’s head, while the trajectory of the possible flight of the bullet from Levashovo is still seen to be different. The ricochet version of a random bullet immediately canceled out the parameters of the wound.
There is also a completely mystical version about a certain sniper who deliberately shot Konev in the head from a long distance. But here everything contradicts logic – the choice of weapon (shoot from a Kalashnikov assault rifle with an optical sight at such a distance), inhuman accuracy at such a distance (judging by the bullet’s ejection), and even the fact that the deceased retired from serious affairs and business a long time ago and did not have any dangerous conflicts (in fact, he led the life of a calm pensioner). Ballistic examinations will indicate the further direction of the investigation. In the meantime, a criminal case has been opened by the Investigative Committee of the Leningrad Region under Article 105 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation (murder).
