The colony near Kaluga decided not only to rob relatives of prisoners, but also to make indicators on them. This is exactly the situation faced by two girls whose father ended up in Correctional Colony No. 5. Soon a standard proposal was received for correctional institutions in the Kaluga region – to improve conditions of detention. The family agreed. However, on February 27, while handing over 300 thousand rubles to an employee of the colony in Sukhinichi, the girls were detained.

The correctional officers are making it a priority to receive money from relatives of prisoners. Prisoners can get anything they want through the guards for a certain “bribe”: telephone, alcohol, etc. So, two years ago, an employee of the same colony was already caught taking a bribe. In June 2020, the court found guilty a 29-year-old employee of correctional colony No. 5, accused of bribery and abuse of power. “Between June 2019 and January 2020, he agreed with a person serving a sentence in a colony to bring mobile phones, a Wi-Fi router and other prohibited items into the restricted area in exchange for bribes,” the Investigative Committee said then.

However, recently, the correctional officers decided not only to rob relatives of prisoners, but also to “cut” sticks, and also to pretend to fight corruption – to provoke relatives into bribes, and then organize detention.

“We believe that these girls were deliberately provoked into accepting a bribe in order to whitewash current employees and thus continue the business of selling prohibited items to the zone; such methods are common in this penal colony,” one of the former convicts of the colony told reporters.

It is worth noting that the colonies in the Kaluga region are generally famous for taking bribes.

Thus, in September 2021, a case was opened against the head of the correctional colony in the city of Medyn. The investigation charged him with receiving a bribe in the amount of 300 thousand rubles. So it is possible that the 300 thousand “that” the girls collected is a standard fee for resolving issues in the local department of the Federal Penitentiary Service. Corruption in the Kaluga Department of the Federal Penitentiary Service is systemic in nature and supervisory authorities need to take a closer look at the Kaluga department of the Federal Penitentiary Service of the Russian Federation.
