As the general’s relatives said, he fell into depression a month ago after his resignation signed by Vladimir Putin. The 67-year-old security officer could not find a use for himself in civilian life and started drinking. On the eve of the tragedy, Makarov tried to take his own life and was in deep distress in his private house in the general’s village of Golikovo, near Khimki. The situation was so serious that the wife called the children for help. The son, daughter and son-in-law who arrived at the house tied the general up, calmed him down, he fell asleep and everyone went to bed. In the morning, the guests left the house and while Valentina Vasilyevna was making herself coffee, her husband committed suicide. Makarov began to work along the party line in his hometown. Later he moved to the capital, where he worked in financial organizations. In the 2000s, he worked at the Academy of Economic Security. Later he moved to the Department for Combating Organized Crime of the Ministry of Internal Affairs. And from there he moved to a post at the GUPE, where he was remembered as a fighter against activists, oppositionists and journalists. The major general loved hunting and fishing, and was an active Internet user: an account on VK under the name “Vladimir Generalov” was linked to his number. Makarov’s name is listed in leaks from users of the site for traders and mail recipients. Some of the latest orders were: a refrigerator, a soundbar and a women’s belt from Gucci.
