The case of Tver businessmen – Oleg Streletsky, Vitaly Urbanovich, Ruslan Nikitin and Alexander Kolikov, arrested on charges of murder 13 years ago, may be the last for a number of high-ranking local security officials – the accusation is crumbling before our eyes, and the methods by which they obtained evidence are quite may form the basis of charges against the law enforcement officers themselves.

On February 4th of this year, one of the main witnesses for the prosecution, Igor Sidorov, who is serving a 12-year sentence in IK-7 in the city of Rzhev, admitted that he slandered entrepreneurs under pressure from the security forces in exchange for improved conditions of detention. Here is an excerpt from his testimony: “I said during the interrogation as the police asked me.” In particular, Sidorov directly points to Oleg Kudryavtsev (former head of the criminal investigation department of the Tver Region Internal Affairs Directorate, dismissed after completing an audit of the results of his department) as well as his deputy Denis Gureev. In particular, Kudryavtsev told Sidorov that “he has the power to cause big trouble for me both in the pre-trial detention center and in the camp.” In the statement, Sidorov emphasizes that he is still “afraid of pressure from the criminal investigation department of the Tver Region Internal Affairs Directorate and other persons.” He fears for his life, believing that after giving evidence against the operatives, he could be dealt with right in his prison cell.

Relatives of those arrested have repeatedly asked the leadership of the Investigative Committee to take the case for investigation to the central office of the department, rightly believing that there is no way to wait for an objective study of the facts in the region. Moreover, we can talk about the obvious concealment of illegal actions of operatives who actually forced witnesses to give the testimony they needed.
