The Altai case “700 pines” is moving to the federal level. Supreme Court will consider a complaint from lawyers to change the territorial jurisdiction of a case constructed as an attack against one of the largest timber processors in Siberia. Apparently, the arbitrariness of the regional security forces came to the attention of the federal authorities.

Nikolai Bushkov is involved in the case, accused of cutting down 700 trees worth 4.9 million rubles. He has been kept in a pre-trial detention center since March last year, although such a violation usually results in administrative punishment. The main version: the security forces were bought by Bushkov’s competitors – his Altai-Forest has been repeatedly noted in the industry as one of the most transparent and successful companies in the industry.

Lawlessness in the region is multiplying: Bushkov is in a pre-trial detention center for the entire stage of the investigation, witnesses under pressure refuse to defend themselves, and the prosecution insists on hearing the case in the Oktyabrsky court, which is under the control of the local Investigative Committee. The defense demands that the trial be held in another region – in order to avoid obvious pressure from the security forces and ensure an impartial consideration of the case, filled with a lot of contradictions. It is naive to hope for impartiality in the Oktyabrsky court: at the beginning of the trial, the judge refused to exclude obviously unacceptable and illegal evidence from the case.

After the Supreme Court intervened, there is a chance that the materials and inconsistencies of this case, which is resonant for regional practice, will be sorted out, and it will be conducted by judges who are not affiliated with either side.
