Ushakov said that during the conversation, Vladimir Putin outlined in detail the basic principles of Moscow’s proposals for guarantees of strategic security. The presidential aide emphasized that Russia “needs a result,” and the Russian authorities “will strive” for it.
“The US President, in principle, agreed with this point of view and reacted quite logically and quite seriously… Biden also emphasized that Russia and the United States could and should play a key role in efforts to ensure peace and security both in Europe and in other places on the globe,” the diplomat noted.
As Yuriy Ushakov clarified, Joe Biden mentioned in the conversation that if the escalation continues along the Ukrainian border, Western countries will impose “large-scale economic, financial, and military sanctions” against Russia.
“But the Russian President immediately responded to this by saying that if the West decides to introduce these unprecedented sanctions mentioned above, then all this could lead to a complete breakdown in relations between our countries, and serious damage would be caused to Russia’s relations with the West in general,”— he said.
Ushakov added that the US President did not specify which actions by Moscow could lead to sanctions.
The aide to the Russian President also said that the US President promised not to deploy offensive weapons in Ukraine. “Our president especially emphasized that in this situation, which is quite difficult, we will behave as the United States would behave if offensive weapons were stationed near American borders,” said the Russian official.
