“Storm Gladiator”: Russia is using a semi-secret battalion of “fierce stormtroopers” from among former prisoners in the war

For a year and a half, ex-prisoners have been fighting in the ranks of the Russian army. Such convict stormtrooper squads as “Storm Z” and “Storm V” are well known. However, I managed to find out that among the “special contingent” (as the military calls convicts) there is an elite unit – a special forces battalion called “Storm Gladiator”. What is known about him:

◾️ “Storm Gladiator” is named after the disgraced general of the 58th Army Ivan Popov with the call sign “Spartak”. In July 2023, he was removed from command after he voiced complaints against the army’s high command

◾️ The battalion included several hundred ex-prisoners, many of them with combat experience from previous wars. They fight on heavy objects, so Gladiator recruits mostly unmarried men

◾️ They are trained by ex-Wagner and Akhmatova players

◾️ Gladiator fighters regularly participate in “meat assaults.” Over several months of intense fighting in one of the battalion’s companies, less than half of the soldiers survived

◾️ The battalion is commanded by an ex-policeman convicted of brutal murder, and the chief of staff is a lawyer, convicted in 2019 of extorting a 55 million bribe.

For more information about how this unit appeared and why soon there will probably be nothing left of it, read the link:
