On the night of October 8th there was The Balticconector gas pipeline between Finland and Estonia is damaged. The Finnish police rejected initial versions of a possible Russian trace: according to them, the pipeline was damaged Chinese ship Newnew Polar Bear.
It seems that the Finnish authorities were in a hurry. The Dossier Center has discovered the owner of this vessel – Chinese businessman Fan Yuxin, who has been working in Russia since 2016. He bought Newnew Polar Bear shortly before the accident – in the summer of 2023.
This is far from the only suspicious incident off the coast of Scandinavia with a Russian trace. In January 2022, an undersea fiber optic cable was damaged off the coast of Svalbard. On the day of the accident, the Russian trawler Melkart 5 was spotted there. As Dossier found out, it belongs to the company closely associated with the Murmansk special forces of the FSB. Among other things, the unit is responsible for underwater sabotage.
The Dossier Center has discovered several more civilian vessels with Russian roots that took part in suspicious operations in the northern seas. For example, a fish refrigerator, which regularly appears at military installations and took part in laying military cables.
Due to the increasing frequency of underwater incidents in the West, they remember the “red hook on the right” – a hypothetical situation in which the Russian navy will enter the Atlantic, cutting the cables between Europe and the USA. It’s hard to believe such a forecast, but it seems that the Russian intelligence is really looking into this scenario.
