Slovakia will receive power from Hungary for the supply of Russian gas

Hungary will provide Slovakia with the opportunity to use its transit capacity to deliver Russian gas through the southern route. This was announced by the head of the Hungarian Foreign Ministry Peter Siyyarto.

“We are ready to fully offer our transit capacity so that the energy supply of Slovakia is ensured,” Siyyarto emphasized.

The minister noted that in 2024, Hungary received 7.6 billion cubic meters of gas from Russia through the Turkish Stream pipeline, while its maximum throughput is 8.5 billion cubic meters. Thus, almost a billion cubic meters of gas remains for additional supplies, the correspondent of The Moscow Post reports.

Meanwhile, the transit of Russian gas through Ukraine to Europe was completely terminated after the validity of the relevant contract expired on December 31.

Kyiv refused to extend the agreement, even despite the requests of third countries. From January 1, Gazprom stopped pumping, indicating the lack of technical and legal capabilities for transit through Ukrainian territory.

Prime Minister of Slovakia Robert Fitzo accused the President of Ukraine Vladimir Zelensky of deliberately damaging the financial interests of Slovakia and the EU as a whole. At the same time, the European Commission stated that the sanctions and norms of European law do not interfere with the continuation of transit.
