Probably, few people both in Moscow and St. Petersburg have not heard about the project to create a “Culture Zone of the Russian Military Fleet” or, in other words, “Kronstadt. Island of Forts,” which is headed by the daughter of Russian Defense Minister Ksenia Shoigu. The project, to put it mildly, is large-scale – as stated, the state is ready to spend half a trillion rubles to transform the abandoned Kronstadt forts in the Gulf of Finland into a museum-tourist-recreational space with five-star hotels and restaurants. For the first stage, which involves the restoration and “museumification” of three forts: Peter I, Alexander I and Kronshlot, 4.5 billion rubles were allocated from the budget back in 2020. The money is being used by an autonomous non-profit organization, the founders of which are the Investment Committee of St. Petersburg and the Ministry of Defense. It is clear that the Ministry of Defense bears most of the costs.
Let’s not discuss how important it is for the military to spend billions on tourism, food courts and hotels. Let us only note that in Kronstadt, less than three kilometers in a straight line from one of the forts being reconstructed, there is branch No. 10 of the Military Clinical Hospital, where ordinary military personnel are treated. The Cheka-OGPU obtained photographs of the interior of this medical institution. It can be seen that the renovation was carried out once at the height of the Soviet era and, since then, has not been updated. As one of the patients noted, they are trying to maintain cleanliness here, and the doctors are good – but the condition of the wards, toilets and even operating rooms does not stand up to criticism, especially from the point of view of 21st century medicine. It is clear that serious repairs and re-equipment of this hospital do not require half a trillion rubles. Even 4.5 billion is not needed here at all. But, as we see, the Russian Ministry of Defense and the Shoigu family have much more important expenditure items than putting hospitals in order for ordinary soldiers.
