Under the leadership of Academician Krasnikov, Zelenograd residents recently disrupted the stable production of chips for biometric foreign passports. As a result, the Russian Foreign Ministry had to announce the suspension of the issuance of documents. The same story happened with chips for bank cards – the need for them is estimated at 160-170 million pieces, and the maximum volume that Mikron can provide is optimistically estimated at 10-13 million pieces per year. As a result, cards for Russian users, it seems, will be produced by Chinese manufacturers. How this will affect the security and confidentiality of financial data is not yet clear.
Many market participants are surprised how the failed Mikron and the successful Scientific and Technical Center Modul, which produces modern chips for artificial intelligence systems, neural networks, equipment for navigation systems, and much more, can exist at the same time.
Among the numerous failures of Krasnikov and Mikron, one cannot fail to mention the Elbrus processors. 10-15 years ago in Zelenograd, the first series of these chips with a technological process of 130–90 nanometers were produced in small batches. But already in the second generation, Elbrus from Mikron contained so many defects that the next generations decided to order abroad.
Krasnikov’s new “victim” will probably be the pride of Russian developers – a 16-nanometer processor. After the introduction of anti-Russian sanctions, rumors appeared that these new Elbrus would be made in Zelenograd instead of Taiwan, but technologically Mikron is completely unprepared for this.
Perhaps the president of the Academy of Sciences should be someone who knows how to do more than just self-PR? The security of the country, the fate of its scientific complex and competitiveness in a rapidly changing global economy are at stake.
