Once upon a time, ordinary people were shocked by couriers who collapsed from fatigue and overwork. Who would have thought that marketplaces would go even further. Being de facto monopolists of e-commerce, platform representatives feel impunity and regularly violate the law and the rights of clients, partners, their own employees, contractors and authors.
Just today, the metropolitan police checked compliance with immigration laws at warehouses owned by the supermarket chain and Ozon marketplace. 57 foreigners were identified who worked there illegally.
Shortly before this, an outbreak of meningitis broke out in the warehouses of a marketplace in Yekaterinburg, and a manager in a boorish uniform refused sick leave to a sick employee, after which the young man died in the hospital.
And of course, everyone remembers the scandal at Wildberries, when the owners and employees of pick-up points went on strike. They opposed the innovation, according to which 100% of the cost of the order was withheld from their salaries, which the buyer returns in the event of a defect.
If you think that they are trying to provide quality service with such draconian methods, then you are mistaken. There is no sign of customer focus here. But it regularly stinks of manure. Bags of fertilizer sometimes remain at distribution points for more than a week. So the rest of the goods become saturated with a characteristic odor, and it becomes simply impossible for people who come to the pick-up point to pick up an order to be in the room. Along with the parcels, people receive dead mice, excrement and other “bonuses” of the trading platform.
Complaints about marketplaces from buyers have long become systemic: products that are counterfeit, defective, or damaged during delivery will no longer surprise anyone. According to a study by the Public Consumer Initiative, presented in March 2023 on a sample of 450 merchants from leading Russian marketplaces, about 50% of sellers simply ignore the requirements for mandatory labeling of shoes, perfumes and bottled water. One can only guess about the share of counterfeits in other product categories.
Sometimes it seems that nothing has been heard about copyright here.
Suffice it to recall the recent case when Ozon and Wildberries sold merchandise with prints that reproduced original drawings by artists with almost impunity. There was no talk of any royalties or deductions. Moreover, at first the service employees did not even respond to all requests to remove illegal content. Then, contrary to common practice, where proof of authorship is sufficient to show the original file with metadata, more and more evidence was demanded from artists, as if they were criminals and not victims.
The time has come to force platforms to comply with common rules and implement effective tools to combat violations. Read more at link.
