On May 16, the Moscow City Court continued to consider the appeal in the case of ex-colonel-“billionaire” Dmitry Zakharchenko. In May 2022, he received 16 years in a maximum security colony and a fine of 470 million rubles.

At the hearing in the Moscow City Court, Vasily Kritinin and Viktor Belevtsov (the Presnensky court sentenced them to 7 years in a maximum security colony for helping Zakharchenko) joined the meeting on the videoconferencing. Zakharchenko himself was brought to court in person, handcuffed behind him: he bowed to everyone present in the room. Valery Markelov did not take part in the meeting due to a critical health condition: on May 11 he was hospitalized due to deterioration (terminal pancreatic cancer).

Lawyer Alexander Gofshtein, representing his interests, confirmed to the court his petition for the need for a medical examination of his client. The representative of the state prosecution, Denis Shtunder, having agreed with this in essence, began to object in detail: he proposed to conduct such an examination in MSCh-50 of the Federal Penitentiary Service of Russia, that is, not in the medical institution that Markelov’s defense requested, referring to regulatory documents and established practice (First oncology hospital in Moscow).

After a half-hour meeting, the court issued a ruling to order a medical examination of Markelov at a medical institution, which the defense requested.

The court hearing was postponed until June 8. The Cheka-OGPU will monitor developments.
