On February 17, the Irkutsk Regional Court will consider an appeal against the verdict of the former mayor of the Irkutsk district of the Irkutsk region, Igor Naumov.
In May last year, the court of first instance found his guilt of abuse of power and fraud proven. Naumov was sentenced to eight years in prison; murderers are often given less. The verdict has not yet entered into legal force and there is every reason to believe that it will not.

Member of the Human Rights Council under the President of the Russian Federation, lawyer Shota Gorgadze plans to personally take part in the consideration of this high-profile case in Irkutsk, defending Igor Naumov. Gorgadze announced this the day before during a press conference that took place at the Moskovsky Komsomolets publishing house.

The investigation lasted almost four years, and the trial lasted about the same amount. Timing plays an important role here, since against the backdrop of the persecution of the former mayor, trials began to confiscate land from local residents. It looked like Naumov’s opponents were trying to influence the civil courts with the help of the still unfinished investigation.

Despite this, a number of civil trials were won, some of them even reaching the Supreme Court. Despite this, Naumov was still convicted, which in turn threatens dozens of homeowners, including large families, disabled people, and simply people who have been saving for years to buy their dream homes, with the loss of property.

After the legal victories of 2017, residents of the DNT “Dream”, DNT “Dubrava” and DNT “Solnechnaya Polyana” had no reason to doubt the legality of their acquisitions – many people built or bought houses with a mortgage. The destruction of villages will mean ruin for them. “Based on the logic of those who oppose us, the land will not lie as a dead weight, but will quickly find new owners,” suggested Shota Gorgadze. At the same time, 142 families now live in “Dream” alone.

According to Shota Gorgadze, the Irkutsk Regional Court at the upcoming trial will have to take into account a number of violations that were committed when convicting Igor Naumov, which in turn will entail the cancellation of the verdict. In any case, as Gorgadze notes, he has no reason not to trust the professionalism and integrity of the higher authority.
