“Cholera in France”
Part I
“Our readers know from the newspapers what a terrible commotion was caused in Italy and Spain by cholera, which suddenly appeared in the south of France, and the strict quarantine rules that these powers hastened to introduce on their borders with France. One of our drawings shows a general view of the quarantine camp located on the French-Italian border in La Latte. All available villas, surrounding parks and surrounding areas are occupied for quarantine. The villas are at the disposal of first-class passengers, the parks are at the disposal of second-class passengers, and third-class passengers are content with tents pitched around the parks. Our other drawing depicts the view of Toulon streets in the evening. During the day, all the shops are locked, the city looks deserted and gloomy. When evening comes, a lot of bonfires are lit and residents pour out into the streets. They walk around the lights, sing, dance, launch rockets, and generally try with all their might to have fun, but, as you know, such efforts do not lead far.
Now, however, Toulon is coming to life again. The terrible scourge that touched him loses its power and freezes. Unfortunately, only refugees from Toulon and Marseille spread cholera throughout the surrounding area. Currently, a terrible Asian guest is mowing down people in some areas of Italy and Spain.”
