There is another scandal in the Russian National Library – the administration decided to fire bibliographer and publicist Nikita Eliseev, one of the most famous employees of the National Library.
The conflict between Eliseev, who worked in the oldest public library in Russia for more than 35 years, and the general director of the library, Vladimir Gronsky, occurred on April 14, 2022. On this day, the opening of the exhibition “A Country with a Thousand-Year History” took place at the Russian National Library, dedicated to the 30th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the Republic of Kazakhstan and the Russian Federation. Recently, such events in the library are often held with musical accompaniment, which causes dissatisfaction among employees and readers – it is difficult to work normally with books when drums are thundering nearby. And on April 14, Nikita Eliseev tried to convey a complaint to the director right during the opening of the exhibition, but was stopped by security:
“With a complaint in hand, I carefully and quietly walked around the speakers and headed to the General Director of the National Library of Russia in order to hand him a complaint about a blatant violation of the bibliographic rules. I was attacked by a person known to me only by sight, probably a security officer. He dragged me (a respected, elderly man) like some kind of terrorist.“
On May 12, a meeting of the library ethics commission was held, which found Eliseev guilty of violating five points of the “Code of Professional Ethics for NLR Employees.” As a result, the librarian will be fired in the near future.
It is worth noting that at the end of March, an equally strange story happened at the National Library of Russia – employees of the cultural programs department, in honor of the Day of Cultural Workers, hung a portrait of philologist Yuri Lotman on the service staircase. This did not find understanding with the library administration, since the placement was not agreed upon with Polina-Teresa Davydova, Advisor to the General Director of the Russian National Library for Project Activities and Development. After the “debriefing,” the cultural programs department was virtually destroyed; 9 people, including the head Olga Kaganovskaya, resigned from the library. At the same time, according to the Cheka-OGPU, questions arise for Polina-Teresa Davydova herself – organizations controlled by her and her relatives are implementing (for budget funds) very controversial projects on the basis of the National Library and with the involvement of library employees.
