The International Criminal Court in The Hague issued an arrest warrant for Vladimir Putin and Maria Lvova-Belova.

What are the Russian President and the Commissioner for Children’s Rights suspected of (and a warrant does not mean an accusation)?

As the Court said in a statement, Putin and Lvova-Belova “are allegedly responsible for war crimes related to the illegal deportation of the population (children) from the occupied territories of Ukraine to the territory of the Russian Federation.”
What do children have to do with being accused of war crimes? It turns out that it is the most direct!
Article II of the UN Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide states: “The Convention defines genocide as the following acts committed with intent to destroy, in whole or in part, a national, ethnic, racial or religious group, as such:[…]violent transfer of children from one human group to another.”

Actually, the Russian prosecutor’s office gives a similar interpretation:

“Genocide is defined as acts aimed at the total or partial destruction of a national, ethnic, racial or religious group, as such, by killing members of that group, causing serious harm to their health, forcibly preventing childbearing, forcibly transferring children, forcibly relocating or otherwise creating living conditions, designed for the physical destruction of members of this group.

A national group of people means a group of people associated with belonging to a particular nation, regardless of the territory of its residence. An ethnic group is a group of people associated with the belonging of its members to a particular nation.

Forced transfer of children during genocide can consist of various violent actions against a national, ethnic, racial or religious group, aimed at forcibly removing children from their parents or other guardians and transferring the removed children to other outsiders, organizations, forced removal, resettlement children from their place of residence to other places.”
