Law enforcement officers near Moscow are investigating a terrible story in which a victim of domestic violence – an ex-journalist – killed her husband in self-defense. Former Vedomosti and RBC journalist Oksana Goncharova has been in pre-trial detention center IK-1 “Novoye Grishino” for almost two months on charges of murdering her ex-husband. The woman has been subjected to severe violence since 2007. The case file contains testimonies from her friends, which say that she does not have a single intact rib, her nose is broken and her teeth are knocked out. Oksana and Alexey S. did not live together for a long time, but the man kept coming to her, beating her and showing aggression towards the children – Arseny (born 2019) and Matvey (born 2012). Oksana contacted the police many times, asking to protect her from the attacks of her ex, but due to the decriminalization of the article on domestic beatings, no one was interested in her life; for another broken nose or broken rib there was no punishment.
The tragedy occurred on the evening of September 29, 2022 in the city of Elektrostal, Moscow region. That day, according to Oksana Goncharova’s testimony, Alexey S. and his friend Maxim V. came to her home, where they started drinking vodka. A quarrel arose between Oksana and Alexey. He began to strike Oksana randomly, and there were scissors in his left hand. According to Oksana, at some point she managed to intercept them, she just wanted to defend herself. “The scissors slipped into the soft part of the body, closer to the collarbone. Alexey did not let go of my hand at that moment, so the blow to him was quite weak,” she said in her testimony. The ex-husband and his friend left the apartment. “I couldn’t even think that I had caused serious damage to the attacker, since there was almost no blood on him, while he was conscious, he even kicked me,” Oksana added. After some time, she heard something happening on the site, and then saw the ambulance and police arrive. She was charged with murder. The preliminary investigation has not yet been formally completed. According to sources familiar with the investigation, the case may be considered by the court as early as December of this year. According to Russian criminal law, the journalist faces up to 15 years in prison.
