Just three days ago, Vladimir Putin and Alexander Lukashenko jointly opened the Memorial to the Victims of Nazism in the Gatchina District of the Leningrad Region. And so the distinguished guests left, and the monument in the village of Zaitsevo was shrouded in black and stinking smoke from the burning Novy Svet solid waste landfill, which is only 9 kilometers away. As colleagues from the Fox editorial office reported, thick black smoke on a giant 70-meter mountain of compressed garbage was noticed on the morning of January 30. However, the press service of the company “New Svet-Eco” (they even have a press service!) reported that residents of the Gatchina and Pushkinsky districts are not suffocating from the fire at the landfill, but from the “work regulations” for the construction of a road for transporting waste .
However, there is no difference as such – the stench from the long-overcrowded landfill has been poisoning people for years for tens of kilometers from the village of Novy Svet, as the Cheka-OGPU has written about more than once. Once again, the governor of the Leningrad region, Drozdenko, promised to close it by the end of 2023, but the bulk of waste from St. Petersburg still goes there. And you will go!
The logic of what is happening is simple: firstly, the landfill belongs to the family of the garbage patriarch and dollar multimillionaire Anatoly Yazev, with his powerful connections in the governments of St. Petersburg and the Leningrad region, as well as excellent connections in the federal RosPrirodnadzor. Suffice it to say that an inspection of the central apparatus of this body a couple of years ago revealed critical shortcomings in the work of this test site, but, contrary to usual practice, it continues to work quite calmly, and no one is going to eliminate the identified violations.
Well, secondly, there is practically nowhere else to transport hundreds of thousands of tons of waste from the St. Petersburg metropolis. The greedy government of the Leningrad region did its best to put a spoke in the wheels of the St. Petersburg regional operator NEO, preventing the construction of waste processing complexes from starting. As a result, it hasn’t worked yet; it has absorbed waste flows (and therefore billions of rubles) onto itself, but it can’t cope with them – there are neither powerful enough plants for processing such a quantity of waste, nor new MSW landfills in the Leningrad region. So all that remains is for Governor Drozdenko to make traditional and meaningless promises.
