Ex-governor Igor Vasiliev nominally headed the region and covered up the schemes of former government chairman Alexander Churin, who left his post as the beneficiary of the largest contractors for the development of budget funds.
Governor Alexander Sokolov is trying to change the situation and clear the government of participants in previous schemes. A number of members of the old team have already been dismissed from their posts. Last week, Sergei Churin, the brother of the former prime minister, lost his posts in the Legislative Assembly. There are other officials with stains on their reputations in the queue to leave: the chairman of the election commission Maxim Finchenko, the head of the SDG and Churin’s classmate Igor Pankratov, the Minister of Ecology Alla Albegova. Practice shows that all of them will subsequently be employed at the enterprises of Alexander Churin. This is how they are motivated not to cooperate with the security forces.
The former “owners of the region” boast that the loot for 5 years is enough to resolve any issues. This may be confirmed by the fact that the local investigative committee does not make any effort to sort out, for example, the scandalous story when the state-owned Vyatavtodor, controlled by Churin, sold a plot of land with a building near the Kursky railway station in Moscow for next to nothing to the ex-premier’s company. Governor Sokolov called this story “outrageous” and sent the materials to law enforcement officers. But over the past months, no effective steps have been taken by the “anti-corruption fighters.”
