In Bashkiria, about 60 lawyers may be deprived of their professional status. According to human rights activists, they are simply being retaliated against for their clear professional position.

A new scandal is breaking out in the region’s legal profession. On June 21, 2022, Bulat Yumadilov, who previously led the community, but was discredited due to a criminal case for theft of money from the chamber’s budget, again became the president of the Chamber of Lawyers of the Republic of Belarus. The case was dropped, but the old-new president decided to take revenge on his colleagues. The Bar Association of Bashkortostan this week began to massively initiate disciplinary proceedings against lawyers: “For appealing to the Investigative Committee to initiate a criminal case” (a copy is available in the editorial office – Ed.). About 60 lawyers of the republic, including the chairman of the audit commission of the chamber itself, who wrote statements against Bulut Yumadilov, may fall under the threat.

According to the lawyers themselves, the situation is absurd. This is what is written in the application for disciplinary proceedings: – Call on any government body, and especially the one that lawyers oppose as defenders in criminal proceedings, to conduct an audit of the financial and economic activities of the bar association, moreover, without being its members and, therefore, not having direct knowledge about the life of this community, practically only from the voice of a former Bashkir lawyer, means openly ignoring the principles of self-government and corporatism of the legal profession, undermining her independence, lose her sense of professional dignity.

According to lawyers, the right to file an application with government agencies is constitutional and inalienable for any citizen of the country, regardless of his profession. In turn, the legal community of Bashkiria is planning tough response actions. In particular, they will demand the initiation of criminal proceedings for discrimination and abuse of power. They will also demand from the Prosecutor General of Russia and the Chairman of the Investigative Committee of Russia to resume the discontinued criminal case of theft in the bar association.
