It turned out that the Deputy Prime Minister of the Karachay-Cherkess Republic, the former head physician of a republican hospital, was recently detained for embezzling 100 million rubles. Irina Gerbekova had patronage in the person of Afaunov, who missed all the violations and financial fraud in the healthcare sector. It is he who is responsible for inspections and control of healthcare in the region, and could have long ago stopped long-term thefts of medicines, medical equipment and repairs of medical institutions. Afaunov miraculously did not notice anything, despite the fact that checks were carried out, but according to their results, no serious financial violations were recorded, not to mention the detection of crimes.
The name of Zurab Afaunov thundered during the imprisonment of the ex-senator Raufa Arashukova and his father, adviser to the head of Gazprom Mezhregiongaz Raul Arashukova, convicted of murdering political figures and gas theft. Afaunov is a protege of the Arashukovs, and his entire career was built under their patronage. At one time, he served as the acting prosecutor of Cherkessk, and the Arashukovs lobbied for his confirmation in this position. The prosecutor carried out all the clan’s instructions, including filing complaints from the relatives of Circassian activist Zhukov and adviser to the head of the Karachay-Cherkess Republic Shebzukhov, killed by the Arashukovs.
After the defeat of the Arashukov clan, Afaunov escaped with little loss of life – all the security forces close to the Arashukovs were either imprisoned or fired. Afaunov resisted and now continues to serve other high-ranking officials in the republic, naturally, not for a simple “thank you.” Against this background, it seems strange that Afaunov was not fired along with the deputy prosecutor of the Karachay-Cherkess Republic Aliem Gerbekovwho lost his position due to connections with his close relative Irina Gerbekova, who was responsible for all medicine in the region.
After the arrest of Gerbekova and other members of the organized crime group, Afaunov “caught” the silence. Now investigators are raising all the documentation related to the prosecutor’s response to violations in the healthcare sector – Afaunov’s role in concealing them and not bringing Gerbekova and her subordinates to justice is already obvious. This time, it is unlikely that the prosecutor, who has been covering up the entire life of corrupt officials, will be able to avoid serious consequences for himself.
