The election of Svetlana Volodina as president of the Federal Chamber of Lawyers (FCA) on December 15 ended the eight-year tenure of Yuri Pilipenko.

Not everyone in the professional community was ready for Pilipenko’s resignation. And this caused a variety of versions of his departure. Information published back in March about serious “showdowns” between the FPA and the FSB due to events in Ukraine recently found an unexpected development, or rather a reversal, on air on the Feigin Live channel.

Let us recall that earlier we were talking about the harsh reaction of the security officers to the appearance on February 27 on the FPA website of a statement calling for “to stop hostilities and begin peace negotiations.” A day later, the statement with the signatures of FPA President Yuriy Pilipenko and FPA Council members Grib, Reznik, Semenyako, Klyuvgant, Dobrynin and Tolcheev was removed from the site. Allegedly, this happened after a preventive conversation between security officers and Pilipenko.

And the other day, during a stream with Ukrainian figure Alexei Arestovich on his YouTube channel, former lawyer, deputy and official, and now popular blogger Mark Feigin questioned the version of the conflict between the leadership of the Chamber and the FSB. According to Feigin, Pilipenko himself, vice-presidents from the Chamber of Lawyers of Moscow and the region Igor Polyakov, Alexey Galoganov and several other people from the FPA work for the special services.

In other words, among Russian opposition figures there is a strong opinion that Pilipenko and the entire leadership of the FPA are proteges of the authorities. This version, therefore, excludes the very possibility of a conflict between functionaries from the legal profession and security officers.
Probably Pilipenko simply went into business because FPA was no longer of interest to him. The Chamber has gradually lost its administrative weight and no longer has the same lobbying capabilities and influence. It is obvious that he sees no reason to head a branch of the Ministry of Justice that does not decide anything, which the FPA will turn into under the conditions of the Northern Military District. And lawyers will lose even that insignificant influence on judicial results that they sometimes still demonstrate.
