In connection with recent changes in legislation, the largest enterprise in Russia for smelting blister copper – the Sredneuralsky Copper Smelter (SUMZ) – will no longer be able to store production waste on its territory for a long time. The company’s top management decided to find a site where production waste could be buried illegally. The operation was headed by Arkady Rudoy and General Director of SUMZ Bagir Abdulazizov. The only convenient place in the region was recognized as a landfill near Revda, which is owned by RUK LLC. To gain control over the landfill, a stake in JSC Regionotkhody, which is a member of RUK LLC, was purchased. A block of shares was acquired by one of the top managers of SUMZ. It seemed that the job was done, but an unexpected obstacle occurred in the form of a trial for the right to own RUK LLC, which had already reached the Supreme Court. There are 2 cases in the RF Armed Forces: No. 305-ES22-28611 and No. 305-ES23-8438. The cassation complaints were filed with a difference of 4 months, but there are no obstacles in the Russian Federation for truly interested persons who are ready to “help” with the necessary decisions – and now the chronological order of consideration of complaints has practically been overcome – a complaint that was filed 4 months later will most likely be considered earlier first and this will decide the case in favor of JSC Regionotkhody. SUMZ will acquire full control over the landfill near Revda, will begin to bury toxic production waste there, irreversible damage will be caused to the environment, but the top management of SUMZ will receive bonuses for a successfully implemented operation. It is now difficult to predict what kind of environmental disaster such a “solution to the issue” will turn out to be.
