Colleagues report that, perhaps, a legendary character for St. Petersburg in the late 90s and early 2000s, billionaire Alexander Sabadash, was released by the court from a pre-trial detention center under house arrest. The former “vodka king” and former senator of the Russian Federation spent about 8 years in the cell. He was arrested in 2014 for illegal VAT refunds worth two billion rubles. Moreover, initially the amount involved in operational developments was several times larger.
Sabadash became famous for becoming the exclusive supplier of Absolute vodka to Russia in the early 90s. In 1997, through a soft raider takeover, he became the owner of the largest vodka distillery in St. Petersburg, Liviz. His sphere of interests included a variety of enterprises in the North-West: from the Russian Diesel plant to the Vyborg Cellulose factory. Sabadash’s authority was so high that after he was elected senator from the Nenets Autonomous Okrug in 2005, he allowed himself to come to Federation Council meetings not in a suit, but in jeans and a white polo shirt.
After the “vodka king” was arrested, his assets were literally torn apart by former partners and enemies, and not much was left of his at least 5 billion fortune. At the beginning of this year, Sabadash was released due to serving his sentence under arrest, but was immediately arrested in a new case of fraud for almost a billion rubles. Some media linked the former oligarch’s misfortunes with a protracted conflict with Roman Abramovich himself. It can be assumed that the time has come for a truce in the conflict.
