A special military operation in Ukraine highlighted the special situation of the once eminent Chigirinsky family of developers, writes Lenta.ru. Suddenly it became clear that neither American nor European sanctions affected them. They have no problems in Russia either. With the eldest, Shalva Chigirinsky, everything is clear: he fled to the West at the end of the 2000s, spent a long time criticizing Russia there, and eventually settled firmly in America, where he just built a 32-story hotel in the very center of New York, in Manhattan . As for the younger Chigirinsky, Alexander, he does not seem to have any special merits to Western partners. Or there is something we don’t know about yet.
It seems that in the near future the Chigirinsky brothers (especially after such publications) will have to make a decision. Either the eldest will come home with a guilty head, or the younger one will evaporate from Russia without much fuss. And in general it is clear which option is more likely. In Russia, the Chigirinsky family has only accumulated debts and conflicts in recent years. Even the “dynastic marriages” of Alexander Chigirinsky’s beloved daughters, thanks to which he hoped to gain a foothold in the highest Jewish circles, burst. But in the USA there are still some real connections and some money left, which I really wouldn’t want to part with.
Previously, the brothers vying with each other told everyone about their quarrel – they say they don’t want to know about each other. But in 2008, Alexander saved Shalva’s assets from the claims of creditors. And in 2015, Shalva tried to help Alexander cheat oligarch Viktor Rashnikov out of $250 million. The legend of “irreconcilable enmity” finally collapsed in 2020, when Alexander came to Georgia for the 70th anniversary of his older brother Shalva. The brothers had a good time in the company of singer Vakhtang Kikabidze, who after the events of 2008 took a radical anti-Russian position.
So brother Shalva will probably help Alexander in a family way with settling in a foreign land and advise him on how to properly draw up an immigration “portfolio.” Alexander Chigirinsky has something to offer the collective West, in addition to his shared love with Shalva for the work of anti-Russian musicians. After all, he was listed as Roman Abramovich’s guarantor for many years. And his son ran a joint “garbage” business with the sons of the ex-head of VEB Vladimir Dmitriev and the same Roman Abramovich. The Chigirinsky family probably has quite “sensitive” information that will help the curators of foreign “sanction” lists.

Saving discord. How do Chigirinsky developers manage to avoid problems both abroad and in Russia?
Russian business faces daily blocking and confiscation of foreign assets. It is all the more interesting to study the behavioral strategy of those few “old school” entrepreneurs whose well-being is not affected by the current situation.
