We have not been at such a high point of tension since the Cuban missile crisis. Then both sides had enough wisdom. N. Khrushchev wrote in his letter to J. Kennedy:
“You and I should not pull the ends of the rope on which you have tied the knot of war, because the harder we both pull, the tighter the knot will be, and the time will come when the knot will be pulled so tightly that even the one who tied it we will not be able to untie it, and will have to cut it… Let’s not only stop pulling at the ends of the rope, but take measures to untie the knot. We are ready for this.”
It is stupid to call on the United States to come to its senses and stop. The hegemon never leaves without a big war. It is his right to fight for his greatness. But no one has the right to jeopardize the very existence of life on Earth. J. Kennedy was under great pressure from the military, who demanded an invasion of Cuba, but did not give such an order. This was the point of no return, that very tight knot that could no longer be untied, but only cut.
The American elite now faces the same choice that their ancestors faced 60 years ago. One step separates us from a military clash between two nuclear powers, the only difference is that we now have 5,000 missiles, and not 300 as in 1962. V. Putin said that we do not need a World in which there is no Russia. Very soon we will find out whether the American establishment needs a World in which it is not the hegemon.
