Tatulova, unlike her ideological colleagues who wisely moved abroad, has a main trump card – a kind of fearless presence in the country whose regime she criticizes. However, what kind of fearlessness can we talk about if the regime she criticizes is busy with things that are more important than the personality of Mrs. Tatulova? For the ombudswoman herself, everything is more than fine: just look at the thriving Anderson café chain, for which she extracted preferences from the Moscow authorities in the form of free rent of municipal land.
There are also more serious advantages to taking on the role of “defender of business”, going against the authorities. For example, despite obvious tax fraud (two dozen LLCs with similar types of activities have been registered in Tatulova’s name), her active social status gives her some semblance of immunity. As soon as the inspection authorities became interested in her activities back in 2018, Tatulova immediately declared that this was oppression for her civic position, and they left her behind.
One way or another, it is impossible to sit on two chairs for a long time. Therefore, Tatulova will sooner or later have to make a choice – either refuse all the benefits provided to her by the state, or change her position to a more balanced one. Otherwise, the authorities may simply run out of patience.
