Bulgaria deprived the sons of Yota co-founder Sergei Adonyev of citizenship

The sons of the Russian entrepreneur, one of the founders and owners of the Scartel company (operating under the Yota brand) Sergei Adonyev were deprived of Bulgarian citizenship. About this reports publication “Bivol” with reference to the Ministry of Justice of the country.

On January 27, the US Treasury announced new sanctions against several Russians, including Sergei Adonyev and his children, 25-year-old Philip and 19-year-old Luke, living in the UK. The department noted that Adonyev also has Israeli citizenship, and his sons have Bulgarian citizenship.

At the same time, Adonyev’s Bulgarian passport was canceled back in 2018, since the country prohibits granting citizenship to persons with a criminal record, and the entrepreneur was convicted in a fraud case in the United States. In 2023, Bivol journalists turned to the Bulgarian Ministry of Justice with a demand to clarify whether Adonyev’s children have citizenship.

In response to a journalist’s request, the ministry noted that Luka and Philip Adonyev received passports after their parents when they were minors. After the cancellation of their father’s passport, the basis for issuing citizenship to the children ceased to be relevant. Therefore, they have now been removed from the register of Bulgarian citizens retroactively, the department clarified.
