As the Cheka-OGPU learned, the head of the clothing warehouse of the military unit in Khankala, Ivan Popov, as part of an organized group, stole and sold protective clothing and ammunition worth 12.6 million rubles. He systematically loaded items from the warehouse into official vehicles and freely removed them from the unit’s territory for subsequent resale.

Over the course of six months, Popov stole:

304 sets of summer suits
53 sleeping bags
5111 pairs of winter socks
1010 pairs of black chrome lacquer ankle boots with laces
503 pairs of insulated mittens
1120 knitted pants in khaki color
5,000 casual caps for contract military personnel in khaki color
7080 light olive cotton T-shirts
1012 khaki knitted T-shirts
502 sets of fleece underwear
603 sets of lightweight long underwear.

A criminal case was initiated against the head of the clothing warehouse under Part 4 of Art. 160 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation (embezzlement using official position on an especially large scale). Popov admitted his guilt and made a deal with the investigation; the criminal case against him was heard in a special manner. On March 9, the court sentenced the contract soldier to one and a half years in prison.
