As the Cheka-OGPU found out, since the end of Prigozhin’s rebellion, the first deputy of the GRU, Alekseev, has been almost always in the military action zone, allowing short trips to the headquarters of the Southern Military District. Knowing that his replacement is being prepared in the person of his subordinate General Alexander Nazarenko, Alekseev is making attempts to bring under his control an increasing number of projects on which the course of hostilities depends. One of these projects is the “volunteer corps”, created with the goal of replacing the functionality of the Wagner PMC on the territory of Ukraine, thereby smoothing out Alekseev’s guilt in the events around Wagner. Alekseev’s protege, the newly minted Major General Denis Barilo, was appointed to lead the “volunteer corps”.
As the Cheka-OGPU previously reported, Prigozhin’s hasty departure to Africa and rapid return were due to the fact that, under the leadership of another deputy head of the GRU, the head of the special activities service Andrei Averyanov, a set of measures was being developed to completely replace the Wagner PMC contingent in Africa. It was planned to create and train an army corps numbering more than 20 thousand people. Prigogine was extremely opposed to this and made every effort to prevent it.
Andrei Averyanov is known for such GRU operations as the poisoning of Sergei and Yulia Skripal in Salisbury, the explosion at a warehouse in Vrbetica in the Czech Republic, and the poisoning of the Bulgarian arms dealer Emelyan Gebrev.
