As it became known to the Cheka-OGPU, a sentence was passed on Dmitry Nikolaenko, a high-ranking employee of the Directorate of Terrorism of the FSB of the Russian Federation. He was found guilty of accepting a bribe from a high-ranking employee of Russian Railways, Mikhail Gridchin, who tried to get out of a pre-trial detention center for a large sum.

Gridchin’s problems in his service began shortly before his arrest – Nikolaenko, a curator from the FSB of the Russian Federation, helped him resolve the issue with his superiors’ claims, and they stopped making them. However, soon the official pressure resumed. In May, an acquaintance of Nikolaenko (he himself went on a business trip) met with Gridchin’s colleague in a cafe, where he said that in order to resolve the issue of not touching the top manager of Russian Railways, $200 thousand must be transferred through him. Gridchin’s colleague did not agree, and on June 7, a criminal case was opened against the railway worker under paragraph “a” of Part 5 of Art. 290 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation.

The investigation accused Gridchin of receiving bribes “for helping bribe givers stay in their positions.” The next day, Gridchin’s colleague met with Nikolaenko’s colleague. A colleague of the Russian FSB officer promised to negotiate so that the top manager would not be arrested, but the amount was $200 thousand before the arrest, and now it may be more. The parties did not reach an agreement, and on June 9, the Dorogomilovsky District Court of Moscow took the Russian Railways employee into custody.

Soon Nikolayenko returned from a business trip, and at a meeting with Gridchin’s colleague, he assured that for $200,000 the top manager would be released under house arrest, and the criminal case would be dropped in court, or he would receive a suspended sentence. The defendant’s colleague agreed. At subsequent meetings, an employee of Directorate T already promised to reclassify the crime as fraud or impose a sentence without imprisonment. The parties agreed to calculate the amount of the bribe based on the exchange rate of 90 rubles for 1 dollar – a total of 18 million rubles.

At the same time, Gridchin’s colleague suspected that Nikolaenko was deceiving him. He recorded all negotiations with the fixer on a tape recorder, after which he contacted law enforcement agencies. The security forces gave him a marked dummy of 10 million rubles (50 thousand rubles of which were real). On August 2, on the eve of the extension of Gridchin’s arrest, his colleague gave Nikolaenko a bribe in a car, after which the latter was detained. The court sentenced Nikolaenko to four years of probation with a probationary period of three years and a fine of 200 thousand rubles. He was also deprived of the right to hold certain positions and military rank for two years.
