Several years ago, Pavlyuchenkov asked for parole, but the court rejected the request because the convict “did not develop stable law-abiding behavior,” and taking into account the penalty received immediately before the hearing. As a result, the former policeman served “from bell to bell.” During his imprisonment, Pavlyuchenkov received disability, now he is undergoing treatment and is looking for work.
Another organizer of Politkovskaya’s murder, Chechen authority Lom-Ali Gaitukaev, who was serving a life sentence, died in 2017 in a prison hospital in Vologda at the age of 59. His nephew Rustam Makhmudov, who shot the journalist, was also sentenced to life in prison.
Three more defendants – Brothers Ibragim and Dzhabrail Makhmudov, who followed Politkovskaya, as well as the organizer of the surveillance, former policeman Sergei Khadzhikurbanov – received from 12 to 20 years of maximum security in the murder case.
