The Literary Institute is located in a building – a cultural monument of the 18th century, the Herzen House. This building served as the prototype for the Griboyedov house in the novel by M.A. Bulgakov’s “The Master and Margarita”, and real writers’ organizations: the All-Russian Writers’ Union, the Russian Association of Proletarian Writers, etc., located in the estate in the 1920s, were established as the literary association MASSOLIT.
What happened to the university is solely the merit of its rector, writer Varlamov. He ruined the university a long time ago, but remained in his position because he has very strong defenders. In particular, he is patronized by Vladimir Ilyich Tolstoy, the presidential adviser. It was he who appointed Varlamov to the presidential council.
University employees have a version that Varlamov and Co. deliberately drowned the university in order to transfer the Herzen House into private hands for a reward. This site of cultural significance is located just 800 meters from the Kremlin.
