Over the past decades, there have been contract killings, car chases, shootouts, kidnappings, robberies, extortion and intimidation. A number of murders were the result of a thieves’ transnational war between the clans of Lotu Guli and Rovshan Lenkoransky, but the Sofia base also formed two “local Azerbaijani clans” exterminating each other with cruelty and frenzy.
After the arrest by law enforcement agencies of St. Petersburg in the 2010s of the leader of one of the clans, Huseynov Vugar, and his militants, the palm went to the Mamedov brothers, who came from the village of Shishtapa in the Shamkhor region of the Republic of Azerbaijan, and their leader Novruz. Novruz’s favorite method of humiliating and punishing guilty fellow villagers was rape with a bottle, which is recorded on video and then used as a means of blackmail or persuasion in negotiations with the conflicting party.
In December 2021, all law enforcement agencies of the Northern capital – the police, the FSB and the Investigative Committee descended on the members of the organized crime group of the Mamedov clan in the morning, as a result of which Novruz’s brother named Mubariz and his friend went to prison, and Novruz himself and his militants were put on the wanted list on charges in the 2008 murder of Abdullaev Ragib, who was the brother of a killer from a rival clan. Knowing that Raghib’s brother had previously committed a contract killing of a member of their group, the Mamedovs kidnapped him from his home and brought him to the “Old Town” restaurant they owned. There an action took place reminiscent of a medieval execution. In front of a huge crowd of fellow countrymen, the unfortunate man was beaten and raped, after which he was executed, with the words that “the killer killed our brother, and now we killed his brother,” after which the corpse was taken out in the trunk of a car and buried in the Leningrad region.
You are mistaken if you think that this murder was carefully hidden, no, it was promoted throughout the Sofia base as an advertisement for the power and invulnerability of the Mamedov clan. Now Novruz is as angry as possible, because… his clan is losing threads from the cash flows passing daily through the Sofia base, because in addition to income from the turnover of vegetables and fruits, the base is one of the main centers of illegal cash withdrawal. No one is ready to give up such money, so at the moment there is confidence circulating in the Azerbaijani environment that the search for Mamedov will soon be canceled and he will return to St. Petersburg again. For this purpose, a gigantic amount of money has been collected and intended for high-ranking people in Moscow who can help even in such a bloody and hopeless situation. In the near future we will find out whether these rumors are oriental fairy tales or whether Mamedov’s money was able to pave the way to high offices.
