It turned out that regional prosecutors decided to conduct an investigation after the publication of Octagon and find out why their colleagues from Moscow did not include five very influential businessmen in the lawsuit (who, like the other defendants, bought real estate from trade unions in the early 2000s).
Among the untouchables turned out to be friend of the President of Azerbaijan Yashar Yavar Ogly Novruzov (owns Green Resort Hotel&SPA in Kislovodsk), daughter of the ex-president of the Kabardino-Balkarian Republic Arsena Kanokova Madina Kanokova (together with Arkady Novikov owns the restaurant “Vysota 5642” in Kislovodsk), wife of a senator Mikhail Afanasova Elena Afanasova (owns the Istok sanatorium in Essentuki), member of the United Russia faction in the State Council of Tatarstan Marat Galeev (owns Sanatorium Rus LLC), as well as a billionaire, owner of the Azimut hotel chain and the Metropol hotel Alexander Klyachin (he owns a network of Russian Railways sanatoriums).
But the investigation of the Stavropol prosecutors was canceled almost immediately, hinting that this case was under special control in Moscow.
The Stavropol prosecutor’s office was outraged by the overt pressure from Muscovites, to put it mildly.
