A court in Gomel sentenced the Belarusian oppositionist, husband of ex-presidential candidate Svetlana Tikhanovskaya Sergei, to 18 years in a maximum security colony. As BelTA reports, the court found him guilty of inciting violence and, together with other oppositionists, was involved in preparing and organizing mass unrest in the country.
“Given that the damage from the actions of Tikhanovsky and those close to him amounted to more than Br3.5 million, the property and funds of the accused were seized. Sergei Tikhanovsky was finally charged under the following articles of the Criminal Code: Part 1 of Article 293 (organizing mass riots), Part 3 of Article 130 (inciting social hatred), Part 2 of Article 191 (obstructing the work of the Central Election Commission), Part. 1 Article 342 (organization of actions that grossly violate public order),” the agency reports. It is noted that data from more than 50 examinations were used in the case.

Operator Artem Sakov and programmer Dmitry Popov were charged under the same articles, and convictions were also filed against Nikolai Statkevich, Igor Losik and Vladimir Tsyganovich.
Initially, it was Sergei Tikhanovsky who was supposed to participate in the elections, and not his wife. He was considered one of the main rivals of the current President Alexander Lukashenko, but he was not registered as a candidate and was detained in May 2020.
