As it turned out, back in 2005, Soyuzmulfilm transferred under an agreement the rights to manage the cartoon and the image of the main character with ears in Asia to a Japanese company. For decades, royalties have been regularly received by Soyuzmultfilm.

When in 2016, under the patronage of Medinsky, Soyumulfilm was headed by Davydov, despite the existing agreement (it had an automatic extension and a court in Tokyo recently confirmed this status) with the Japanese, in secret from anyone, he concluded an agreement on the transfer of exclusive licenses for Cheburashka to the American company laRubint . The company belongs to Israeli citizen Lyala Rubshtein, known for her multimillion-dollar lawsuits against toy manufacturers. And shortly before his dismissal, Gleb Davydov entered into additional agreements with laRubint, one of which was to extend the contract until 2033.

As soon as Medinsky’s protégé was fired in 2017, the American company filed claims against the Japanese distributors. They showed a valid agreement with Soyuzmulfilm, “reinforced” by all possible authorities. Then laRubint filed a lawsuit against Soyuzmultfilm in a New York court for $26 million (lost profits) with an almost certain prospect of satisfaction.

According to the interlocutor, the domestic film studio has already hired lawyers in America, but the representatives will rather look for an opportunity to negotiate with the plaintiff for a more acceptable amount.

It is noteworthy that when the situation with the claim was revealed, Gleb Davydov first told representatives of Soyuzmultfilm that he did not remember about the agreement with laRubint. After he was shown his signature in a copy sent from the US court, the ex-director recognized the autograph. However, he refused to testify during the trial that he should not have entered into the contract. In recent days, they tried to call Gleb Davydov for questioning at the Investigative Committee, but “they couldn’t find him.”
