A source from the Cheka-OGPU told the biography of the commander of the Vostok-Akhmat battalion, Vakha “Askhab” Khambulatov, who wanted to shoot a checkpoint in Mariupol. He was once a saboteur in the detachment of a field commander close to the head of Ichkeria, Aslan Maskhadov, carrying out bombings of representatives of the federal forces. After the murder of the commander, Khambulatov went over to the side of the Russian Federation. At the same time, he retained a “negative attitude towards the feds.”

According to the interlocutor, a ticket “to the big life” for Vakha, Aslanbek “Zakat” Saliev (commander of the Akhmat-Chechnya regiment, which includes the Vostok-Akhmat battalion) and his right hand Ruslan (Skat) was given by “field commander” Usman , who had the call sign “Sniper” and fought against federal troops. “Sniper” was one of Aslan Maskhadov’s closest associates. Usman selected Vakha, Aslanbek and Ruslan into his detachment, and trained professional saboteurs from them, who during the second Chechen war specialized in “undermining” representatives of the federal forces. Then Sunset and Skat were detained with a bomb right at the moment of preparing the next explosion. However, they spent about 6 months in prison; straight from there they transferred to the special forces detachment created by the Yamadayev brothers of the Vostok battalion.

Vakha Khambulatov remained with Umar; they were hiding in the mountainous area, from where they carried out sabotage against representatives of the federal forces. Then Umar went to the flat area to contact Maskhadov, was ambushed and killed. (In 2005, Maskhadov himself was killed). Aslanbek agreed that Vakha would transfer to the special forces detachment of the Vostok battalion.

Askhab, Zakat and Skat were in the special regard of the Yamadayevs; some of them and their relatives were part of the brothers’ personal guard, which did not prevent them all from going over to the latter’s side immediately after the conflict between the Yamadayevs and Kadyrov. To celebrate, Kadyrov immediately included all three of them in his personal security. Then Aslanbek Saliev had the best career. He became the commander of the traffic police regiment of the State Traffic Safety Inspectorate of the Ministry of Internal Affairs for Chechnya, then headed the Vostok-Akhmat battalion. During the war on the territory of Ukraine, he was wounded in the leg (an officer standing next to him was torn to pieces), after which he was promoted and became a regiment commander.

According to the source, Vakha Khambulatov has two characteristics. The first is hot temper. In the court database you can find that in 2020 he was tried in Crimea for attacking a local resident, breaking his phones and video recorder. But the trial ended without a verdict – due to the reconciliation of the parties. The second is the irritability towards the “federals” that has survived from the “mountain times”. “In any situation, Vakha rushes at them, threatens them, and can even beat them. There were many such cases, but this one was caught on video. I have no doubt that nothing will happen to him,” our source believes.
