As the Cheka-OGPU learned, a court in Khabarovsk sentenced officer Maxim Gul to five years in prison and a fine of 300 thousand rubles for fraud on an especially large scale (Part 4 of Article 159 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation) in relation to a former war participant who did not wanted to return to Ukraine after being wounded. Gul demanded 1.8 million rubles from the serviceman for transfer to another military unit.
After a conversation with his wife, he turned to the FSB, where he was offered to participate in an operational experiment. The security officers gave the serviceman 30 thousand rubles in banknotes and fake banknotes of 5 thousand rubles each, simulating the amount of 1.77 million rubles. In the service apartment, the officers agreed that the wounded man would be transferred to a military unit. When the latter was about to leave, Gul stopped him with the words: “And now the most important question. Financial”. After this, the serviceman handed him the money, and Gul was detained. 
The latter partially admitted his guilt, saying that he really wanted to help the military man. According to Gul, he planned to spend most of the money received on lawyers “to legally assist S. in transferring and not sending him to the Northwestern Military District zone.” He allegedly planned to keep 5-10 thousand rubles for himself as compensation for transportation costs and communication services. The case of giving a bribe on an especially large scale against a wounded serviceman was dropped because he contacted the FSB before transferring the money.
